Biography of Fred Radke - Part II

 

MUSICAL RANGE: Fred Radke has has also played lead trumpet for the Glenn Miller Orchestra, led by Ray McKinley, and appeared in the same role with the Dick Jergens Orchestra, Leslie Uggams, The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Johnny Ray, Phil Harris, The Modernaires, Jack Jones, The Pied Pipers, Earl Grant, The Lennon Sisters, The King Family, Dennis Day, Connie Stevens, Pat Boone, Edie Adams, Anita O'Day, Rich Little, Art Lund, Ella Fitzgerald, Connie Haines and Mel Torme. The Seattle Symphony has also featured him as guest soloist.

RECORDINGS AND PERFORMANCES: Fred has recorded with Harry James as well as with his own big band.  He has appeared on the CBS, NBC, CBC, and ABC television networks. Radke has performed for many prominent VIPs, most notably President Richard M. Nixon, President Ronald Reagan, President George Bush, and Olaf, King of Norway. He produced and appeared in shows starring Frank Sinatra Jr., Giselle McKenzie, The Modernaires, Dennis Day, Frankie Lane, Kay Starr, Helen Forrest, Connie Stevens, Gina Funes, Vic Damone, Diahann Carroll, and Rich Little. Fred was musical director for television shows starring Frankie Lane, Helen Forrest, The Modernaires and Kay Starr. As leader of the Harry James Orchestra, Fred performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2009 and 2010, in a "Battle of the Bands" format opposite the Glenn Miller Orchestra (2009) and the Artie Shaw Orchestra (2010).

OTHER MUSICAL PRODUCTIONS: Over the last twenty years, Radke has provided his own popular big band and produced shows for conventions at major hotels throughout the United States and Canada, including the Four Seasons Hotels in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York, and the Ritz Carlton in Chicago. Fred was Music Director for The Four Seasons Hotel in New York and The Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle, Washington.   He has performed on numerous cruise ships, including the Crown Odyssey, and numerous ships operated by the Holland America line including the Prinsendam, Rotterdam, Volendam, and Amsterdam. For several seasons he produced the popular "Let's Dance" live radio show on Friday nights for Seattle radio station KIXI.

OTHER GUEST APPEARANCES: A respected authority on big-band history, Radke is the resident instructor of Jazz Studies at North Seattle Community College  and has toured extensively as guest trumpet soloist and lecturer on the art of playing the trumpet and the history of jazz. Mr. Radke performs trumpets designed and manufactured by Tony Scodwell of Las Vegas, Nevada.

HONORS AND AWARDS: Over the past thirty years, Fred Radke has been a driving force the Pacific Northwest in helping keep alive the great cultural institution of jazz. The Mayor of Seattle proclaimed May 6th as "Fred Radke Day" for his work preserving the classic sounds of big band. 

Radke is a past member of the College Foundation Board, which raises funds for college scholarships. In 1998, through the Bruce and Jolene McCaw Foundation, a $50,000.00 Music Scholarship was awarded in Fred Radke and Gina Funes' names, with a duplicate scholarship at the University of Washington. Fred was the recipient of the Honored 1988 National Music Expression "Public Service Award" by the Evergreen Safety Council. In 1994, The Director of the Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbor, bestowed the title of "Honorary Chief Petty Officer Musician" for providing countless hours of entertainment and service to the United States Navy.

Fred is also a member of the American Society of Composers, Arrangers, and Publishers (ASCAP). He is a great supporter of the U.S. armed forces and is a lifetime member of the U.S. Marine Corps Support Group, Seattle.

OTHER ACTIVITIES. Fred is an avid outdoorsman. Daily jogging helps keep him in shape. Besides being a fly fishing enthusiast, Fred, along with his wife, Gina, enjoy downhill skiing in both North America and Europe. Radke has lived in the Seattle area since 1966.
